Villa Radicofani

Nine bedroom villa in the Val D'Orcia done in a minimal contemporary style. From $11,211 per week

Tuscany-Southeast/Val D'Orcia Villa 17

The Val d’Orcia is a wonderful area, due to the protection of the natural beauty of its enchanting landscape so much so that it is recognized to its artistic heritage, and for these reasons recognized as a Unesco World Heritage Site.

It is in this marvelous natural context that Faggeto is set, formerly a convent and recently transformed into a villa of high standard and great charm.
A path lined with old cypress trees leads up to the villa, which is completely fenced and where the noises of the modern world cannot be heard, but where you are simply surrounded by gently rolling green hills and where a real sense of peace and quiet reigns supreme.

The villa offers every convenience: from the pool and the carpet-surfaced tennis court, to the double pool house, one complete with sauna and shower and situated below the pool, the other next to it, with changing room and a bathroom with shower.

Within the gardens there is even a lovely little fenced lake. The villa has a billiard room and two computers with wireless internet connection.
Faggeto is on three floors. The ground floor consists of spacious and light dayrooms. The kitchen is particularly lovely, complete with high standard furniture and furnishings. It is modern and extremely practical. From the kitchen, just as from all the other rooms on the ground floor, there is direct access to the garden.
Only one bedroom is on the ground floor. The others are on the first and second floor. The style of all the bedrooms and the conveniences provided in them are all the same. This is what makes this villa a perfect choice for groups of friends. The bathrooms, too, are similar, their travertine and local terracotta tiles creating a mix of pastels that are pleasing to the eye. The towels are top quality.

This hilly part of south-eastern Tuscany is also famous for its beneficial thermal baths. San Casciano dei Bagni offers a fabulous spa and thermal pools. Cetona is an enchanting Tuscan town with a couple of well-known restaurants and the weekly market well worth a visit. This is the real Tuscan countryside! For lovers of good wine, Montepulciano, where wine cellars offer wine and art, is a must.

It is always an anxious event arriving at a holiday home, particularly when others are depending on your choice. Finding the road to the villa was quite easy, assisted by the Sat Nav in the rental cars. (we had two cars between the six of us). The instructions to the villa from the turn off were very misleading – they said we could take either a steep downhill to the left or a longer route to the right – it sounded easier to go right in the unfamiliar territory. However the road to the right leads down a narrow gravel road to another property which was closed with no possibility of turning around, so a long reversing manoeuvre was required to get to the correct steep downhill drive.

However, when we arrived at the property we were spellbound. Warmly received by Elisa and shown around the place, everyone had jaws on the floor. The property is simply stunning. The house is huge as you would know but everything about it was wonderful. It lies on the top of a ridge in the centre of a huge valley, views in every direction -to the hill top towns of Radicofani in one direction and Cell sul Rigo in the other. The surrounding countryside is beautiful rolling farmland. Sunrise and sunset are stunning, rolling mists in the valleys below early in the day, lights in the villages at night, sheep roaming the far pastures, autumn colours all around. And no tourists!! (other than us). Interestingly when we visited Montepulciano, which is lovely, we were so glad we did not stay there because we rapidly learned to love the splendid isolation, beauty and peace at Faggeto.

The facilities on the ground floor are excellent, great kitchen, beautiful lounging areas, good laundry, internet including wifi. More than enough space for us to all be together or to spread out and have our own areas. The grounds are beautiful – wonderful pool area and surrounds. Lovely gardens. The tennis court although grass, is not all that great . The court grass in poor condition and would be better as synthetic grass if they were serious about having it be used by guests. We occupied the bedrooms on the first floor – each couple had a lovely bedroom with ensuite. We did not use the top floor but there were another four bedrooms and ensuite at the top as well plus another lounge area – amazing spaces.

We did not realise that our rental also included a traditional breakfast cooked for us on our first morning by Bianca who also cleaned for us twice during the week.
We also had a wonderful dinner cooked for us by Bianca during our stay. All the produce was local – she had made her own home cured prosciutto, wonderful hand made ravioli and the best roast whole chickens (one each!) we have ever tasted. Elisa had recommended we have Bianca's tiramisu which was also superb. Bianca was also assisted by her daughter Antonella. The whole evening was truly memorable. We made sure to tip them both generously – they were most grateful.

The driveway produced some challenges – it is steep and gravelly. The rain that occurred just before we arrived made it slippery. My brother in law put one of our cars into the ditch next to the driveway on our first morning, completely stuck. Elisa solved the problem by calling Bianca's son who came within 15 minutes with his big tractor and pulled us out. On subsequent journeys we learned to hit the throttle hard to get enough speed up to get up the hill. In reality the drive was not too much of a problem after it dried out as the week progressed.

The only other issue we had with the house was the prohibitive cost of heating. We were somewhat surprised that the heating bill was 300 Euro for one week. We used the heating very sparingly we thought. We informed Elisa that we thought the charges for heating were excessive. Subsequently she spoke to the owner who agreed to reduce the charges by 100 Euro in view of the problems we encountered with the driveway. I still feel that the heating is quite expensive, on top of the rental charges. I think they might do better to charge a bit more and have no hidden cost at the end of the week.

These two issues aside, the experience at Faggeto was truly memorable. The splendid rural setting and the proximity to the wonderful southern Tuscan towns was such a surprise. In fact we saw so many "untouristy" Tuscan villages like Radicofani, Pitigliano, Sorano, San Casciano and Montalcino that we did not bother venturing further north to Siena and San Giminiano. I had seen the latter during my Red Travel day and it was architecturally lovely but full of tourists. In some of "our" towns we were the only English speaking people in town. I think that Pitigliano was everyone's favourite. We also spent a couple of days where we just vegged out at the villa and took long walks.

We did have a brief communication from the owner who told us that he plans to address the driveway problems this winter.

We would love to return to Faggeto and stay there in the late summer when it would be great to laze around the pool. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Thank you so much for helping us to have such a memorable holiday.
