Domus Bagnoreggio

Very Special Ultra-chic three bedroom restoration in the historic village of Civita di Bagnareggio, featuring an indoor pool within the 2500 year old grottos.

Lazio Villa 6

To arrive at the foot of Civita di Bagnoregio is to discover a place that until then only existed in dreams: the ultimate Italian Hill town preserved by a rich and splendid history and by the love of its current inhabitants. Entering the old town by walking over its footbridge and going through its Etruscan gateway is like stepping back in time 600 years to rediscover the beauty and peace of a different way of life. The town appears almost made of gold and silver - the gold of the tufa rock of its cliffs and houses, the silver of its basalt paved streets. Like a jewel that was eroded by time only to preserve its most beautiful core, Civita will transport you to a place of wonder and poetry, close to the incredible history of man’s tenacity and vision, to nature’s endurance and labor of love. Civita’s most illustrious citizen, the philosopher Saint Bonaventure, once said “sentiment penetrates where intelligence does not reach”and the town in many ways represents just that...a place to get lost in, beyond our understanding of it. We believe that Civita is one of the most noble and beautiful places on earth and by restoring a small piece of it we wanted to partake of the magic that enticed us when we first fell in love with it. The restoration of Domus Civita was first of all an homage to a town that survived earthquakes and landslides, war and famine, and found its rightful place in our modern world; and, secondly an attempt to provide a unique experience of serenity, beauty and respite for the discerning traveler and lover of Italy.

The price of rental includes gas, water, electricity, bed linens, all towels, soaps and detergents. It also includes final cleaning, 2 midweek cleanings, use of all appliances and equipment. Distances

Civita di Bagnoregio is a unique destination: a pristine Medieval village on a promontory set in a vaste valley carved into volcanic rock by two rivers. Its only connection to the modern world is a footbridge by which you will travel the last half mile of your voyage into another world, virtually untouched by modern life. This town founded by the Etruscans, conquered by the Romans, shaped by the architecture of the Middle Ages and Renaissance is located in central Italy in the Lazio region at the border with Umbria. It survives and thrives in the heart of the Alta Tuscia, the beautiful and historically rich land of the Etruscans, and offers a gateway not only to the past but to many beautiful villages and towns in southern Tuscany, western Umbria, and northern Lazio. If you are travelling by car, Civita di Bagnoregio is 15 minutes south of the Orvieto exit on the A1 highway connecting Rome to Florence, 15 minutes east of the ancient Via Cassia connecting Rome to Siena. The closest train station is Orvieto which is only 15 minutes away and about an hour’s ride from Rome. The closest airport is in Perugia but Rome’s Fiumicino airport is the most convenient for international travel (1.5 hours away). hile Civita is a wonderfully isolated, almost otherwordly spot, an oasis of tranquility and romance, there are several restaurants and 2 café / bars in town. You can find all the other amenities required for a pleasant stay in its sister city of Bagnoregio--the town on the other side of the footbridge and less than a mile away. This includes banks, a gas station, a weekly market, a supermarket, bakeries, and all the other wonderful shops a typical small Italian town has to offer. While Civita is famous for its beauty and links to antiquity, Bagnoregio was made famous by Fellini who filmed the movie La Strada on its streets. So geologically, geographically, historically and culturally, Civita and its environs are located at the juncture of the heart and soul of Italy!! Rome Airport: 100 kms, Rome Center: 95 kms, Orvieto: 20 kms, Todi: 45 kms, Bolsena Lake: 20 kms, Pitigliano: 50 kms

Recommended Local Restaurants

Forno di Agnese
One of our favorite places in town and just around the corner from Domus Civita, It is run by lovely owner Manuela who is always charming and happy to assist and accomodate anybody. The food is authentic and delicious home cooking of traditional recipes sometimes with a little twist. The service is like being in a friend’s home, gracious and genuine. Great local wines, Antipasti and a delicious lemon tiramisu’! Located just off the main piazza, across from the church.

La Cantina
This is quintessential Civita as it has been for decades. It is a restaurant without a kitchen! Everything they serve is either grilled on the fireplace (meat, sausages, vegetables), cooked under the ash (potatoes, to die for), fresh cut with a knife (prosciutto, salame, bread), or preserved and marinated in the owner Antonio’s olive oil (eggplants, zucchini, peppers, etc.) Service is rustic with plastic plates and paper napkins but the flavors are authentic, delicious and the ambiance just perfect! Located next to the church

Mercatello
At the base of the foot bridge is a good restaurant with a great view of Civita from its terrace. The cuisine is very local and always genuine and includes fresh fish from nearby Tirrenian sea as well as lake Bolsena. The service is friendly and attentive. Across from the restaurant is one of the best gelato icecream bars in the area. Perfect on any time of day but especially on a hot summer afternoon! Try the mint and the chocolate flavors!

Bagnoregio

Il Bocconcino
Is a tiny little restaurant just across the stone gate of the city. It serves a mixture of local and Sardinian cuisine (the owner is from the island of Sardinia) in a cozy atmosphere. The food is very well prepared and the flavors very good. We enjoyed the selections of wines, all from local producers.

Bolsena

La Pineta
This restaurant has a lovely location on the Bolsena lake shore, just a 15 minutes drive from Civita and a few steps from the center of Bolsena old town and castle. It specializes in fish delicacies including seafood and lake fish and serves mostly fixed sampling menus that are quite good! All their food is well prepared and the service always very professional. Paula and Janet : “Exquisite week”
Just returned from an exquisite week spent at Domus Civita. The villa is a perfect blend of the modern and the ancient, and Patrizio spared no effort in ensuring that we enjoyed our stay to the maximum. Thanks for introducing us to drivers Luca and Francesca, who whisked us everywhere we wanted to go in comfort and luxury; Elisabetta and Francesco, who provided an impassioned and fascinating tour of Orvieto, both above ground and below; Agostino and Marco for a much welcomed massage session at the villa; and Gustavo for his wonderful meals, his attention to our every need, and most of all for his friendship. If you have the chance to stay in Civita, make sure you have at least one meal at Ostaria al Forno di Agnese and enjoy the hospitality and beautiful food courtesy of the owner, Manuela. This was an experience of a lifetime, and we cannot recommend Domus Civita enough to anyone who has ever dreamed of the perfect Italian vacation

Chris : “Unparalleled experience”
Dear Patrizio It's hard to overstate how wonderful this country, town, home is. You have provided unparalleled experience by creating this lovely home inside this enchanting town. We enjoyed our three weeks, lived much as the locals do, and made some wonderful memories with the locals as well. And let me sing the praises of Gustavo, warm, charming, helpful and easy going. He has made an already excellent experience flawless. I do hope to come back someday, but if not I will have memories to last my whole life. And I will tell my friends (but not too many as I don't want the secret to get out). We wish you much success and thank you for a great time.

Lisa and Jacob : “Truly a find...”
Patrizio, we had a WONDERFUL time at Domus Civita! As usual, you both have outdone yourselves. Civita is truly a find. I was delighted by the fact that it is so pristine and untouched---no touristy shops, no plastic signs, no McDonalds, no billboards. Everything was tranquil and unspoiled. The shopkeepers were so welcoming and friendly. Jacob came back from his first foray to the cafe on the corner to say that "word had spread in town" and people were asking if we were the family "at Patrizio's, with the babies". We received the same warm welcome at midnight mass, where we have a picture of Geoffrey kissing the baby Jesus after making the procession to the manger. You were right about the Live Xmas Nativity--it was a real treat. That was one of the two nights that our cousins were with us from Geneva. They also had a great time and took a ridiculous number of photos. We also had a fabulous evening with Iside and her cooking class. Our meal was so wonderful that Jacob and I actually drove up to their restaurant La Parolina in Trevinano the following day for lunch. I'm sure Iside thought we were insane!

Sonia : “Heavenly beauty”
Civita di Bagnoregio has been defined as unique, extraordinary, magical. And truly, spending some days at Domus Civita heightens all of these aspects, adding a new dimension: the private enjoyment of Civita's enchantment. When you are done visiting the environs, or strolling around in Civita (getting to meet Civita's inhabitants is one of the many charms of this small village (as it is to eat at the cozy Forno di Agnese). Staying at Domus Civita felt like being able to privately enjoy the heavenly beauty of Civita. When all the tourists cross the bridge and leave, one feels left in a very special place: the large spaces and the hidden nooks of the house can only mildly prepare you to the stunning beauty of the garden. Sharing a glass of wine with friends in the private magic of the garden, or looking outside from the pool is an experience one can hardly forget.
